Outgasing?

Possono fare compagnia all'Etiopia Grigio-Viola!

L'ho trovata: http://cgi.ebay.it/Sold-As-Parts-OMAS-75th-Anniversary-Ercolessi-LE-FP-NR-/150584377822

:set2010091:

Tom, my Visconti Voyager Anniversarys (modern celluloid) were stored in a Delta zippered case left partially unzipped to let the gas out. But after some months, I noticed white/green oxidation on the clip, emerging from underneath the sterling silver plating. The pens, the celluoid, felt slightly damp/wet; I could wipe it off. I cleaned them up, then put them back in the zippered case. 3-4 month later, there's oxidation again with the same damp feeling on the celluloid. There were some other celluloid pens in the case -- mostly old Viscontis made of vintage celluloid -- but none showed any oxidation on the clip nor did they feel damp to the touch.

I'm not sure what is happening with the celluloid on those modern Viscontis, but I decided to store them separately and differently. I suspect if I had not checked on them, they may have eventually shown the same damage as your Tibaldis.

HI Eric, I got a message from Visconti, they said, yes, they knows about this - it does not only happen only in closed boxes - but mostly. and Mazzucchelli, they have no clue, what is the process behind this. Anyway, a bath in Lye to neutralize the acid is alway recommended.

Saluti Tom

Thanks Tom. It's a known problem. :set2010034:

Lye!?! Doesn't that burn human flesh? A bath in lye doesn't sound like something I should try at home in the kitchen sink. I'll keep an eye on these, if they keep doing it I'll send them to Visconti.

well - a moderate solution of base - some NaOH - not the solid pellets of Soda Caustica thrown over the pen - that would sure neutralize - give it a try.

Visconti wouldn´t do it differently.  if they ever did such an operation....

Ok. But can't I just put the pen in a Coca Cola bath? That stuff works great for removing some kinds oxidation (I'm not joking), supposed to eat teeth too. Maybe that will work?!? Any left over I can drink. :set2010080:
